Invite-only party apps: what "invite-only" actually buys you

By Raziel Tabib, co-founder of Mesibash

"Invite-only" gets used as a vibe word. Dark flyer, no address, a code in the story. But the vibe is the surface. Underneath it are four concrete things a host stops worrying about, and they're worth spelling out, because they're the difference between a guest list and a room.

What invite-only actually means

A party app is invite-only when there is no way to find the event except through the host. No feed of "what's on tonight," no search box, no city page. The event exists at a link, or behind a code, and the only people who have it are the people the host gave it to and the people they passed it to.

That sounds like a limitation. It's the point. Discovery apps are in the business of putting your party in front of strangers. Invite-only apps are in the business of getting your people in.

The four things it buys you

1. Who sees it

On Mesibash, your event reaches the people you sent it to and the people they vouch for. That's the whole radius. You post the flyer to your own story, drop the code in your own group chats, and the link travels one degree at a time: your friend, her roommate, the guy from the group chat who's always a good time.

What it doesn't do is broadcast your party to anyone scrolling a feed in your zip code. Nobody shows up because an algorithm suggested you.

2. Who's in

Invite-only is only half the job if anyone with the link can buy. So Mesibash lets you require approval, per event. Guests request to attend, with an optional intro ("Jordan's roommate, he said to ask you"). Their ticket stays locked until you say yes. Everyone gets an email either way, and a guest you passed on can ask again.

The order matters: you approve, then they pay. You're never refunding someone you didn't want in the first place.

3. Where it is

The address is the single most leaked piece of information at a party. A public listing publishes it. A forwarded flyer publishes it. On Mesibash the address goes only to ticket holders, close to the event, so the people who know are the people who are coming. It keeps the block quiet and it keeps the mystery, which is half the hype.

4. Who's at the door

Every ticket is a real name and a one-time QR code. Hosts pass identity verification through Stripe, guests pass an identity gate, and names are locked to tickets. You hand out scanner passes so the roommate working the door can scan without your login. A screenshot of a ticket doesn't scan, and nobody argues with the scanner.

What it doesn't mean

It doesn't mean exclusive. The word people reach for is "exclusive," and that's the wrong one. Invite-only is about belonging: your people, and the people they vouch for. The guy who gets in because his friend said "ask the host" is the whole model working.

It doesn't mean small. How people get in and how many get in are different questions. Mesibash hosts throw recurring house parties and venue takeovers for 50 to 300 guests. The list grows through sharing, not browsing.

It doesn't mean paid. Free events are first-class. The code, the approvals, the address drop and the door all work on a $0 ticket.

When a public listing is the right tool

Honestly: if you're an artist with a show, a promoter filling a 1,000-cap room, or a bar running a public night, you need strangers, and a discovery app earns its fee by finding them. Eventbrite, MyPlots and the campus apps exist for that, and they're good at it.

The case for invite-only is narrower and, for a lot of hosts, exactly their situation: your crowd already follows you. They come from your stories and your group chats. You don't need to be found. You need the last mile: a link that works in one tap, a yes screen, an address that drops at the right time, and a door that runs itself. That's what Mesibash is for.

How it runs on Mesibash, end to end

  • Create the event and set ticket tiers, free or paid. When you charge, you set $15 and you get $15; the guest adds a processing fee of 5% + $0.30 at checkout.
  • Share the link or the six-character code where your people already are. Guests buy on the web in one tap.
  • Approve requests before they become tickets, if you turn approvals on.
  • The address drops to ticket holders close to the event.
  • Run the door with one-time QR codes and scanner passes for your crew.
  • Get paid about three days after the event. The hold is what lets a friend-of-a-friend trust a host they've never met.

The right people make the party. Invite-only is how you get yours in.

Frequently asked questions

What is an invite-only party app?

An invite-only party app is one where an event can only be reached by a link or code the host shares, never through a public feed or search. Guests come from the host's own circle and the people they vouch for. Mesibash is built this way: every event is reached by link or a six-character code, hosts can approve each guest before they pay, the address is revealed to ticket holders close to the event, and the door runs on one-time QR codes tied to verified names.

Does invite-only mean the party has to be small?

No. Invite-only describes how people get in, not how many. Mesibash hosts run recurring house parties and venue takeovers for 50 to 300 guests; the guest list grows through friends-of-friends sharing the link or code, not through strangers browsing a listing.

Do guests need an account or an app to buy an invite-only ticket?

On Mesibash a guest opens the link, passes a quick identity check, and buys on the web in one tap. No install is needed for guests or for door staff scanning tickets. Hosts use the app to create events, approve guests, message ticket holders and get paid.

Do invite-only events cost more to run?

On Mesibash hosting is free and free events are free for everyone. When a host charges, they receive exactly the price they set and the guest adds a processing fee of 5% plus $0.30 at checkout, so a $15 ticket costs the guest $16.05. Payouts arrive about three days after the event.
